| January, 2008 Monthly Meeting Highlights
Barcelona Council Annual Meeting...... The annual meeting of the Barcelona Council was held on January 24th, where Board members were elected and the agenda confirmed. We thank the hard work and dedication of our Board for 2008. Happy Hour Presentations initiated..... We will be hosting the first of our monthly happy hours after our February Board meeting, featuring our special guest speaker, Maria Garcia Duran, marine biologist, "Species of the Mediterranean Sea and their Journey toward Extinction." Click here for a review of the event. * * * * * * The Barcelona Council hosts exciting presentations regarding maritime-related events, and invite all those interested to join us. RSVP to barcelonanlus@gmail.com Past Presentations: NLUS Barcelona Council was honored to have co-sponsored the "Security and Commerce in the Mediterranean" conference, held at the Maritime Museum. With 77 people in attendance from various sectors of trade commerce, mostly civil society and business men and women, the conference promoted disucssion of defense of the Mediterranean region for trade and commerce. Special keynote speaker Vice Admiral John D. Stufflebeem, Commander, U.S. Navy Sixth Fleet, flew in from Napoles to deliver a rousing message, touching upon the need to coordinate the security forces, intelligence and information networks to defend the region of the Mediterranean against possible attacks by sea. Admiral Stufflebeem also encouraged closer cooperation between the Allied nations with efforts of the United States to provide globalized security. |

| The conference was organized by NLUS Barcelona Concil President, Jose Garcia-Reyes and counted on the participation of the Spanish Navy, the Institute of Strategic Studies, the Port Authority of Barcelona, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, the the European Institute of the Mediterranean. Congratulations to Pepe and everyone involved with this most successful conference, and our thanks to Adm. Stufflebeem and his staff, for accepting the invitation to speak. His presence among us renewed our commitment and enthusiasm in the NLUS.
* * * * * * * * * * The Barcelona Council welcomed General Jim Jones, Supreme Allied Commander at NATO, and Admiral Harry Ulrich, Commander of the U.S. Sixth Fleet, as keynote speakers during the Second NLUS European Region Conference, hosted for the eleven NLUS European Councils. General Jones´ presentation touched on the importance of becoming inclusive and working together as a European Region for a greater sense of collective security to meet the challenges of this very dynamic and very difficult century from a security standpoint. |
