A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE
4TH OF JULY
CELEBRATION......

During the summer months of 1776, the delegates of the 13 British colonies in North America came together in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to debate whether the colonies should be in their own right free and independent.

As the delegates from the colonies debated, a committee of five drafted the Declaration of Independence, which stated to the world that the colonies were freed from British rule, and set forth the fundamental principles that would guide the formation of this new nation.  "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

The committee meeting in Philadelphia voted to approve the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.  Nine of the 13 colonies voted to approve the declaration, two voted no (Pennsylvania and South Carolina), Delaware voted undecided, and New York abstained.  Since then, July 4th has been considered the official birth of the United States of America.  The following year, spontaneous celebrations of Independence Day were held.  Since the early 1800s,  cities throughout the country have organized elaborate festivities to commemorate this most important date in American history.  Travel throughout the U.S. and you´ll find parades, concerts, sports events, picnics, and, of course, the fireworks.  Americans proudly show their colors and join together to celebrate a common heritage of liberty and democracy.
UNA BREVE HISTORIA DE LA CELEBRACION DEL DIA DE LA INDEPENDENCIA.....

En el verano de 1776, los delegados de las 13 colonias británicas de Norteamérica se reunieron en Philadelphia, Pennsylvania para debatir la audaz propuesta de que estas colonias son, y por derecho deberían ser estados libres e independientes.

Mientras los delegados deliberaban, un comité de cinco personas redactaron un documento que llegaría a ser conocido como la Declaración de Independencia.  Al presentar la propuesta de independencia de las colonias al mundo, la declaración sentó los principios fundamentales de la nueva nación. "Creemos que estas verdades son evidentes en sí mismas, que todos han sido creados iguales, que el Creador les ha otorgado unos derechos inalienables, entres los cuales están la vida, la libertad y la consecución de la felicidad."

El grupo runido en Philadelphia votó la aprobación de la Declaración de Independencia el 4 de julio de 1776. Representantes de nueve colonias de las 13 colonias votaron a favor, dos (Pennsylvania y South Carolina) votaron en contra, el representante de Delaware votó indeciso y el representante de Nueva York no votó.  Desde entonces se ha considerado esta fecha como la de la fundación oficial de los Estados Unidos de América. Ya al año siguiente, se empezó a conmemorar de forma espontánea este aniversario. Desde los años 1800 las ciudades americanas ya organizaban eleborados festejos, una tradición que todavía continua en la actualidad. A través de los Estados Unidos se celebran desfiles, conciertos de música, actividades deportivas, picnics y fuegos artificiales. Los Estadounidenses muestran su bandera con orgullo mientras celebran una herencia común de libertad y democracia.
